David Sacks is Donald Trump’s pick to be the White House AI & Crypto Czar: a new role that would exclusively oversee AI and cryptocurrency policy.

After three years as Chief Operating Officer at PayPal, Sacks went on to found a handful of successful companies including venture capital firm Craft Ventures, where he’s currently a general partner. He’s also co-author (with Peter Thiel) of the best-selling book The Diversity Myth and co-host of the popular “All-In” podcast.

While the official duties of this role have yet to be established, Trump said Sacks will “work on a legal framework so the Crypto industry has the clarity it has been asking for”.

“Czar” in U.S. politics is an informal title usually reserved for someone who has broad authority over a single policy area (e.g. Obama’s “car czar” oversaw the restructuring of the automotive industry). So when it comes to crypto, it’s safe to assume the position will have three core responsibilities:

In addition to his role as White House AI & Crypto Czar, Sacks will also lead the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology, one of many policy councils that advise the president.
