A Bitcoin strategic reserve is a proposed stockpile of Bitcoin that the U.S. government may accumulate for various economic reasons. The reserve would be held by the Treasury.

A strategic reserve is a backup supply of important assets. Reserves can exist for anything–Quebec even has a strategic reserve of maple syrup.

The U.S. government has strategic reserves of everything from grain to helium. It also has various financial reserves, such as $37B in foreign currencies and the largest gold reserve in the world. Here are some of the reasons why the U.S. could soon build up a Bitcoin reserve:

The “Bitcoin Senator”

In July, Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) mounted the stage at The Bitcoin Conference in Nashville, TN, clutching a handful of papers. She then proceeded to unveil the BITCOIN Act: a bill that, if passed into law, would establish a U.S. Bitcoin reserve.
