A Day in the Life of Business Development Executive Laura Gomez

What’s it like working as a Business Development Executive at MoonPay?

3 Aug 2021by Laura Gomez

About me

I'm Laura from the growth team at MoonPay. I currently split time living between London and Bogotá. I recently finished my dual masters in international business and disruptive innovation. Prior to that,  I studied International Affairs in Washington, D.C. I joined MoonPay during my masters program in November 2020, and honestly, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

The flexibility of working remotely has allowed me to continue traveling and learning more about my passion for art. I also get to work with some of the best people in the crypto space!

What does your typical day look like?

As a business development executive at MoonPay, it is fair to say that every day varies. The growth team has the vital task of growing the business by acquiring new customers and ensuring that our current partners have the best possible experience.

I usually wake up around 5:30, have a cup of coffee and get ready for my workout. At 6, I go for a quick run before starting my day. After I make my second coffee, I head to my balcony to begin my workday.

I like to start the day by creating a to-do list where I record all of the tasks that need to be done that day. Then I answer internal communications and emails from partners. Usually this also leads to more to-dos throughout the day. Once I’m done, I read the news and crypto highlights to make sure I'm informed and up to date on what's going on. This also helps me get some prospecting opportunities.

Around 10, I have a quick walk and breakfast. Then I head to my desk and take a look at pipeline updates. I try to ensure that all of them are up to date and that the clients I am onboarding are moving forward and that new inbound leads get the necessary information to start onboarding. I also take this time to do focused work, where I get all of my organisational tasks done.

I usually like to take my calls in the afternoon, so I have some time to prep. If I don't have calls during the day, I take the time to study a specific blockchain or something else within the crypto space that I'm curious about. Before joining MoonPay, I wasn't a crypto native, but this job has allowed me to have constant growth in my knowledge and challenge me to become better each and every day, which falls under the MoonPay principle of Kaizen.

Usually my day ends around five. Since our team is worldwide, however, there are some days when meetings happen at random times. I try to join these when I can.

What do you love about being a Business Development Executive at MoonPay?

The first thing that comes to mind is not knowing who I may speak to day to day! My role allows me to talk to people from all over the world. Whether it's internally or with our partners, I can have conversations with people from Hong Kong to San Francisco on the same day.

I also get to be part of a team that genuinely cares about my professional and personal development. Every day my team teaches me how to improve, create new business opportunities and expand my horizons. They really push me to become the best version of myself. I also love the genuine interest we have in our clients and their projects.

What do you love about working at MoonPay?

Working at MoonPay has given me the opportunity to work on projects that I am interested in, such as NFTs. It gives me the flexibility to choose which clients I want to chase, and really enjoy the trust that is given to me by my team.

How and why did you end up joining MoonPay?

I first learned about the blockchain through my masters degree, and I became very interested in this technology and its various use cases. Coincidentally, Ivan, our CEO, reached out to me on LinkedIn and mentioned that they were looking for someone to help them expand in Latin America.

That was the beginning of my immersion in the crypto industry. After my first talk with Ivan, I took all of my electives in crypto-related topics and joined as a Business Development Analyst while I finished my studies. As soon as I graduated, I started working full time.

What's an exciting challenge you're facing in your role over the next 6-12 months?

The hyper growth of MoonPay comes with a lot of new business opportunities. For me, the most exciting thing has been in the NFT space. Currently we’re building a product that will allow purchases of NFTs with credit cards.

With this product, we will create new partnerships with people in the art space, which is a big passion of mine. It really excites me to be able to bring one of my biggest hobbies into my work. It’s also both challenging and exciting to see how we can facilitate the adoption of NFTs into the non-crypto world. I'm looking forward to the progress we will continue to make over the next several months.
